This Year, Protect Your Pet From Parasites
The American Heartworm Society (AHS) recommends that all dogs and cats with outdoor access be on year-round parasite prevention that should include heartworm, and flea/tick medications. These medications protect our pets from infestation with gastrointestinal parasites, heartworms, and flea/tick borne disease. They also help to prevent the spread of parasite disease to people, especially children and those with weakened immune systems.
Revised testing protocols from the AHS recommend annual blood testing for heartworm disease. This also helps to monitor our pets for tick-borne diseases. Every heartworm test at Kuenzi Family Pet Hospital includes screening for the tick diseases Lyme, Anaplasmosis, & Ehrlichiosis. Approximately 11% of our patients that tested last year were positive for one or more of these diseases.

About Hill's Pet Food Recall
Hill’s Pet Nutrition recently put out a voluntary recall on their canned food products due to potentially elevated levels of vitamin D. Although animals benefit from vitamin D, ingesting too much of it can lead to potential health issues. Luckily, in most cases, complete recovery is expected after discontinuation of the canned food.
Hill’s is working in coordination with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to get the affected products recalled. As of right now, the recall only extends to canned food and does not apply to dry food, cat food, or other treats.

Keep Your Pets Safe This Winter
Did you know that cold weather poses serious threats to your pet's health?
Use these tips to keep your pets safe during the cold weather:
Annual Blood Work Can Add Years to Your Senior Pet's Life!
In pets over 7 years of age, it is recommended to check lab work at least once a year. Blood (CBC & chemistry panel) and urine testing evaluate your pet’s internal organs, and can help uncover underlying medical problems that may not be obvious from the physical exam.
These tests can help us monitor your pet’s health, and allow us to catch illnesses early.
- A CBC evaluates white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. Abnormalities can indicate infection, stress, anemia, immune or clotting problems.
- A chemistry panel tests for diabetes, kidney function, liver function, electrolytes, and blood protein abnormalities.
- A urine test checks for signs of infection, diabetes, and kidney function.
